Personal Reflections
  • What are your personal thoughts and reactions to the artist’s work?
Amanda: I really enjoyed researching Piper’s artwork. I like how her performance art literally called people out on being racist, and supporting race/gender stereotypes. Her big idea is not only personal to her, but can relate to many other people.
Scott: Adrian Piper’s work is bold and courageous.  My favorite piece is My Calling Card because of her use of concise yet polite language to make a point. Her work is intellectually derived, yet is raw and emotional in practice.
  • Connections to readings, in-class discussions, personal life, etc.
Placing identity under the microscope is a big idea that can be translated into classroom projects, perhaps even Conceptual / performance pieces within the school.  Piper’s work is inspirational because it is not based on advanced technical skill, but rather meaning-making endeavors with which students can connect personally.
